Sun, Skill and Silverware: P6 Take the Cup!
Our Primary 6 pupils enjoyed a fantastic day of sport as they took part in the inaugural Lecale Trinity Grammar School - Primary School's Gaelic Football Cup—and what a day it turned out to be!
The tournament brought together mixed teams of boys and girls from local schools, creating a wonderful atmosphere of inclusion, teamwork and friendly competition. With the sun shining brightly throughout the day, the conditions were perfect for an exciting festival of football!
The standard of play was outstanding from start to finish. There were impressive scores, strong tackles and brilliant blocks on display, showcasing the skill and determination of all involved. Between matches, our pupils had the opportunity to take part in a range of skill stations, led by the PE staff from Lecale Trinity Grammar School. These sessions were thoroughly enjoyed and added an extra layer of learning and fun to the day.
A big thank you must go to Mr Cherry and Mr Kearney, who organised the event so well, and to the Lecale Trinity students who helped to officiate the games, ensuring everything ran smoothly. We also got to see two past pupils who were heavily involved in the tournament - Mr Hazard who is a PE teacher in LTGS and Cillian who is not only a great player, but refereed a number of games brilliantly too!
The day was rounded off with a thrilling final with Holy Family Teconnaught. After winning all our previous games in the group, then a quarter final versus St Brigid's Downpatrick, and a semi-final versus St Nicholas' Ardglass, the final was going to be the seventh match played in severe heat. It was a true humdinger of a game, packed with end-to-end action and excitement. Both teams showed incredible determination and resilience, but in the end, our P6s emerged as winners of the Cup—a fantastic achievement! The nerves, the worry all melted away when the final hooter sounded and the Cup was coming back to St Patrick's! The cup was presented to Emma and Tadhg by Down player and PE teacher Miceal Rooney and afterwards they both made a speech thanking LTGS, the staff and all of the teams who played.
We are incredibly proud of the effort, teamwork and sportsmanship shown by all of our children throughout the day. Thanks as well to parents who helped out and provided a few treats to keep everyone cool and hydrated. Well done to everyone involved! πππ
On a wee side note, it was also the last school game for Mrs Fitzsimons, before she eases into retirement - a lovely and fitting way for this to start after her commitment to our school and the many years of dedication to football in the club too. She enjoyed it by soaking the children after the game!
