School visit NMDDC
Our School Council had a brilliant day on their visit to the Newry, Mourne and Down District Council (NMDDC) Chamber. We were warmly welcomed by Chair, Philip Campbell (Saorla's dad!), who took time to explain how the council works and the important role it plays in our local area.
The children were full of curiosity and asked some fantastic (and very honest!) questions, including “How much do you earn?”, “How do you pick your successor?” and even “Do you get to keep your necklace?” — which certainly brought a few smiles! Philip was great at answering so many questions and giving us such an insight into the business conducted in the chamber.
A real highlight was getting to sit in the councillors’ seats and use the microphones, making everyone feel like part of a real council meeting. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed this hands-on experience and gained a great insight into how decisions are made.
To top off a great visit, the children were treated to lunch before heading back to school. It was a memorable and enjoyable day, and a wonderful opportunity to learn more about how our district is run. Big GRMA to Philip and also Sarah who ensured everything was organised for us.
