School Council
Our pupil voice spoke loudly today as the children and staff voted for a new School Council for the year ahead. The manifestos were shared all week and the persuasive posters have been on display in the hall and classrooms as the children tried to ensure they had enough votes to be first past the post.
The school hall had two voting booths and the ballot box was front and centre ready to accept the ballot papers from every child in P4, P5, P6 & P7 as well as all of the school staff. The voters had to choose a boy and girl in P4 & P5 and then two boys and two girls from P6 & P7. A few years ago, the children decided that this would be the format and that the additional councillors in P6 would ensure the voices of the children in P1, P2 and P3 were brought to council meetings and their ideas shared too.
Mr Philip Campbell, Chairperson of NMDDC came to count the votes and then announce the winners. He wore his chain of office throughout - reflecting the importance of the occasion. He said he'd never been more nervous! The counting took quite some time as the votes were so close, but finally the classes were able to return to the polling station and our new councillors could be revealed.
- P4: Caoimhe and Lucas
- P5: Aoife and Teddy
- P6: Emma, Helenka, Cormac and Darragh
- P7: Elin, Niamh, Dylan and Owen.
Congratulations to our successful candidates, and a huge well done to everyone who stood for election. Great courage to put your name forward and to share some excellent ideas with classmates and staff. Now the hard work starts!
Thanks to Mr Campbell for coming along and helping with this year's elections. Taking time from a busy schedule is much appreciated, and getting the chance to embarrass his daughter in P4 certainly made it an unmissable opportunity!
