Lent begins

2nd Mar 2022

Lent is that period of time, beginning today on Ash Wednesday, which is set aside for penance, fasting and almsgiving in preparation for the celebration of Easter.
Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting and abstinence. There are only two fast days in Ireland - Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting means adults bewteen the ages of eighteen and sixty can eat only one full meal a day. Abstinence in Ireland forbids the consumption of meat and applies to those over the age of fourteen. This obligation endures throughout life. Remember – NO Friday treats during Lent.

Lent is a time to say sorry, a reflection of the Penitential nature of the season.

Many people give up something for Lent (a food, watching TV, etc.) or do something to bring them closer to God such as daily devotions or charitable donations. FAST - PRAY - GIVE. We have talked about this in school.

Ashes were distributed in school today and we've talked about making our Lenten promises.

This year we are able to host our weekly Easter Egg raffles to raise money for two worthy charities - Trócaire and Downpatrick Autism Family Support Group.

Tickets are 20p each and when children bring in some chocolate eggs to their classes, they're raffled every Friday. We'll also have some other fundraising during Lent such as our World Book Pyjama Day!
