Lecale Cluster Finals: One Cup Won, One Epic Battle (and a Lot of Drama!)
Our boys’ and girls’ Gaelic football teams pulled on the school colours one final time this week—and they didn’t disappoint! The annual Lecale Cluster competitions served up skill, nerves, excitement… and just a little bit of heartbreak and heroics.
The Boys: Unbeaten… Until the Final Showdown
The boys stormed through their group unbeaten, booking their spot in the Pat Watterson Cup final against St Mary’s Dunsford. With the wind at their backs in the first half, they edged narrowly ahead—but a couple of golden chances were left out there on the pitch.
Dunsford, clearly having taken notes from the group stages, came out with a plan. They tightened up at the back, found their rhythm up front, and made their chances count. Despite a brave effort, the cup made its way to St Mary’s this time. Huge credit to our lads for an outstanding effort, and congratulations to the Dunsford boys on their win! The cup was presented by Mr Clifford of St Malachy’s, (Mr Watterson’s old school), adding a lovely touch to the occasion.
The Girls: Cool Heads, Fast Feet, Championship Winners
Not to be outdone, our girls also topped their group unbeaten (must be something in the water!). They faced a tough final against a combined St Joseph’s Killough and St Malachy’s Kilclief side.
The first half? Tight. Tense. The kind of match where every pass feels like it matters just a little bit more. But if there’s one thing this team has shown all year, it’s teamwork—and when the pressure was on, their slick passing and constant support for each other shone through.
The result? A fantastic win and the Sonia Kinsella Cup coming home with us! 🏆
To make the day even more special, Sonia’s daughter Aisling refereed the matches throughout the morning (no pressure there!), and was also on hand to present the cup to a delighted—and very noisy—group of champions.
One cup, two valiant efforts, and a whole lot of pride. What a way to sign off in school colours—unbeaten runs, unforgettable moments, and memories that’ll last a lifetime.
Well done to every player who pulled on our school jersey—you’ve done St Patrick's proud!
