Irish News Coaching Day

11th Jun 2021

During the first lockdown last year the Irish News went ahead with their competition for primary schools to win a coaching day with St Mary's University, Belfast. We were very lucky to have had Conor's granda Martin Fitzsimons collecting all the tokens for us and we were even luckier to have won! Martin has a long association with the GAA having played for Saul and being a committee member for a lot of years. He was also involved in the brilliant Down teams that won the Sam Maguire in the 1990s.

The coaching day finally went ahead on Tuesday and the children from P7 had a brilliant time at the pitch with Gavin McGrilly (PE lecturer at St Mary's and current Down senior football coach) and an enthusiastic group of coaches including Owen McCabe Jude in P4s cousin. They enjoyed lots of skill practice, games and milk as it was sponsored by Strathroy Dairies. It was a brilliant day and the coaches commented on not just how brilliant the boys and girls were at gaelic football, but also on their brilliant manners and team work. Well done everyone and thanks Martin!
