Girls Gaelic Footballers denied in semi-finals

22nd May 2019

Our Girls gaelic football team gave a great account of themselves in the Castlewellan blitz today. Drawn in a tough group with Holy Family Teconnaught, Bunscoil Bheanna Boirche and St Joseph's Carnacaville they were up against it.

In the first match they faced Holy Family and after a slow start picked off some lovely scores to run out winners. The Bunscoil were next and they scored a fine goal and point to scare the girls into action. A save from Orla-Rose lead to the ball being cleared to rebecca who soloed before laying off to Eva who shot for goal. The keeper saved, but Poppy popped up to finish to the net and the girls never looked back to win again. Carnacaville in the last group game again started well, but the girls sent over some fine points, including a long range effort from Erin to send them unbeaten into the semi-finals.

Drawn against the hosts St Malachy's Castlewellan, the girls scored first, but the 'Town' imposed themselves with wave after wave of attacks. Clodagh, Anna and Beth defended strongly and restricted the score enough to keep Saul in the running and with a minute left there was only one score in it. A point from distance put the hosts into the final though and the girls were very gallant losers.

In the third place playoff they now met St Columban's Kilkeel. In spite of the fatigue from playing so well on such a warm day, the girls rose to the occasion and beat a strong Kilkeel side with every girl contributing to the win. What a day!

Thanks to the mums who were able to help with transport (&Amy's dad!). Thanks to Mr O'Neill from St Malachy's Castlewellan who organised the blitz and who kept it running so smoothly. Most of all thanks to the girls who really played well and showed what great sporting talent they have!
