Democracy in Action at St Patrick’s!

9th Oct 2025

We were delighted to welcome Fiona, the Education Officer for the Westminster Parliament based in Northern Ireland, to our school on the eve of our School Council elections — a very important day for our pupils!

During a special assembly, Fiona spoke to the P4, P5, P6 & P7 children about democracy and citizenship, helping them understand how both the Westminster Parliament and the Northern Ireland Assembly play a role in shaping the laws and decisions that affect our lives. Her visit couldn’t have come at a better time, as they are preparing to cast their votes and make their voices heard.

The children had the opportunity to share what matters most to them, and their thoughtful responses truly impressed all the adults in the room. From reducing GP waiting times and improving rural footpaths, to strengthening electricity lines and — of course — shortening the school day, their ideas were insightful and inspiring!

They also showed a strong understanding of important laws, such as the sugar tax, plastic bag bans, paper straws, and mobile phone regulations. When discussing what it means to be a good citizen, their suggestions included not littering, being responsible pet owners, and even making veterinary care free!

Fiona was mightily impressed by the strength of our pupil voice. With such engaged and thoughtful young citizens, the future is certainly in safe hands at St Patrick’s!
